Difference Between Contract and Temporary

There is a perception that contract and temporary employees are synonymous.  While there are a great number of similarities in the way you hire/pay/treat both contract and temporary employees, there is one distinct difference.  Contract employees usually have a fixed term associated with their work.  Temporary employees are more open ended and fluid. 

Contract work is often used in the IT or technology world where consultants come in and work for a fixed term.  Once the term is up they can be renewed and many times they are but there comes a point in time where the contract ends and either the employee or employer can elect to not continue the relationship. 

Many times it is associated with another contract that the employer is trying to fulfill.  This means the employer wants to bring on extra skilled personnel to complete the contract but does not want the long term burden of carrying an employee on the books.
