Telephone Interview Tips for Companies

telephone interview tips

When interviewing a candidate over the phone, often interviewers try to 'get to know' the candidate. Instead, focus on their communication skills over the phone. One telephone interview tip for companies is to ask direct questions, count how many ahh's and umm's.

Ask various direct questions like about a job they listed on their resume that seems not to fit or was short in duration. See if they are vague or try to change the topic.

Keep it short, less than 1/2 hour and treat it as a first test to gauge communication skills. Keep notes about any warning signs or surprises so you can follow up on a face to face interview should you chose to move ahead.
