How to handle job interview questions... That is the question on the mind of many job seekers when going for a job interview.  There are often a standard set of employer interview questions you should be prepared to answer.


This list is intended to give you some sense of the types of questions asked in a standard interview.  Do not worry if you can not answer all of the questions as some may not apply to you.

Answer as many as you can.  If you get stuck, pause, try to relate the question to a situation you encountered that was similar.  Relate the action you took and describe the results.

General Questions about yourself/job/companythese are often the starting point for the interview.

  1. Tell me about yourself

      Note: They are not looking for a biography. Short focused answer as it relates to the job is sufficient

  2. How did you hear about this position?

  3. Why are you applying for this position?

  4. What attracted you to this position?

  5. What challenges are you looking for in a job?

  6. What assets would you bring to this job?

  7. How will you contribute to the company

  8. What skills and attributes would you bring to this position?

  9. Why should we consider hiring you?

  10. What do you know about this company?

Work History & Job Questionsthis is often the next phase of the interview where you tell them about your past work

  1. Tell me about your last/current position.

  2. What was/were your title, position, responsibilities and achievements?

  3. Why are you leaving?

  4. What were your biggest challenges? And how did you deal with them?

  5. What was your greatest accomplishment?

  6. What was your greatest frustration about your last job?

  7. What would the people you report to say about you?

  8. What would the people who report to you say about you?

  9. What was your compensation package?

  10. What have you been doing since you left or where else have you been looking?

Job Fit QuestionsThis is where you are trying to explain why you could do the job.

  1. What are your strengths?

  2. What are your weaknesses?

  3. What are the special skills and abilities that make you unique?

  4. Do you consider yourself a success at your job?

  5. Tell me about your work style, do you work best in teams or independently?

  6. What is your ideal work environment?

  7. Tell me about your typical day at work?

  8. Do you work better in a fast paced open environment or a structured environment?

  9. How do you handle deadline stress?

  10. Have you ever done conceptual work or started from scratch?

  11. Have you ever done production work?

  12. Have you ever done product improvement work?

  13. Have you written proposals or done presentations?

  14. What do you attribute you success to in your job?

  15. What type of training would you see as useful to make you a better employee?

  16. Have you ever managed people? How many?

  17. Did you ever have to discipline or fire someone?

  18. What is your management style?

  19. Have you ever had management training?

  20. Who was the best boss and worst boss you worked for and why?

Goals Questions this is where you are looking into the future and seeing if your goals align with the opportunities available at the company.

  1. What are your career goals?

  2. What are you looking for in your next position?

  3. Where do you want to be in 5 years?

  4. What income goals do you have?

  5. Would you consider relocation for a promotion?

Wrap up QuestionsThis is where the interview is wrapping up. It is your time to ask questions about the company and make your final points.

  1. Do you have any questions about the job?

  2. Do yo have any questions about the company?

  3. Is there something you'd like to add?

  4. Tell me why we should hire you?

  5. Is there anything we did not cover?
