Outplacement Companies

When to Use Outplacement Companies?  That is the question facing a number of companies who face layoff situations.  Here are some useful tips to help you out.

The Layoff

The difficult decisions an employer must make sometimes includes layoffs.  This is a painful process for the employer, the employees being downsized and it impacts the morale of the employees that remain.  Often the impact is much more far reaching and treacherous.

What Not to Do
Recently we heard the story of a company who laid off a bunch of people and they did it so poorly that the employees being laid off were angry for the way it was handled.  Very little severance, brought in on a Monday and told they were being let go at the end of the month and told to pack up their things and go home.

The 50K Problem
Though these employees did not have a case, some were going to file wage and hours complaints at the fair housing and labor commission.  One was talking about hiring a lawyer.  If it gets to a lawsuit, it can easily cost $50K per lawsuit even if you are right!

Layoffs in the Internet Age
Go type in "layoff horror stories" in Google.  You'll see thousands of web pages devoted to the topic.  Blogs and Twitter posts all over the Internet.  In the internet age, it is easy for a disgruntled ex-employee to brand your company as evil and heartless.

Impact of Future Hiring?
Bad PR, dealing with the government or worse lawyers can turn a layoff situation into a long term nightmare.   Imagine the impact on your future hiring?  A great candidate is coming in for an interview and this person does some research on your company on the internet and finds the blogs and postings from these people.  Might this scare away a great candidate?

The Solution is Simple
If you are afraid of bad press, legal action, or the future impact of such actions, there is a solution...outplacement with Synergy.

When a company takes the extra step and provides outplacement assistance, it sends a number of messages both to the employees being let go and the ones remaining.  It says this was hard and painful decision but it had to be done and we really do care about you and want you to give you the best possible chance to land somewhere else.

Attract Top Candidates with a Layoff?
Well maybe you won't attract them but you may impress them.  Imagine a comment coming back from a separated employee being thankful for the training and skills they received to help them find a new position.   If that were out on the Internet, wouldn't that be a better message for your future star candidate to find?

Knowing that if you took a job with this company and things got bad, at least this company takes care of their own.  The message that even in bad times the company works to take care of their own provides  a measure of comfort to any candidate considering a job offer.
